Paul Friedmann, MD, MBA, Executive Director

Dr. Friedmann has been involved with PVLSI from the beginning. As Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Baystate Medical Center, he served on the Institute's Board of Directors as its first chair. He became its first Executive Director in 2002. In this capacity, he is responsible for leading the Institute's strategic development and all management functions.

A long-time economic development leader, Dr. Friedmann chairs the Regional Technology Corporation's Bio Economic Technology Alliance and is the Dean's Professor for Biomedical Innovation at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is nationally recognized for his leadership in graduate medical education and is certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. D. Joseph Jerry, PhD, Science Director

Dr. Jerry assumed the role of the Institute's Science Director in October 2010 and is responsible for its scientific focus and all aspects of its development as a research organization.

A renowned geneticist with expertise in tumor suppressor genes and their implications in many types of cancer, Dr. Jerry has authored more than 50 scientific papers. At the Institute, his laboratory focuses on the cellular mechanisms of the p53 tumor suppressor protein and its link to the development of breast cancer. He served as the 2009 Gordon Conference Chair for Mammary Gland Biology and as a reviewer for NIH grants on clinical and molecular pathobiology and molecular oncology. Angelina M. Pizzanelli, MBA, Administrative Director

Ms. Pizzanelli is responsible for all aspects of the Institute's operations and financial affairs. Prior to joining PVLSI, she was the Director of Operations & Finance for Academic Affairs at Baystate Medical Center. She has extensive experience in laboratory management, human resources, finance, operations, and research administration.
